Good quality rubber is essential for radial tyres: N Rajagopal

Rubber Board Secretary N Rajagopal has said that good quality of rubber is essential for radial tyres. He was inaugurating the series of workshops the Rubber Board is conducting in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for entrepreneurship development in rubber sector. He added that there is huge scope for private entrepreneurs in the country.

“The Rubber Producers’ Societies have been producing good quality sheets. But the volume handled by them is small. This calls for entrepreneurship development in the sector,” he said.

These workshops are organised by the Market Promotion Division of the Rubber Board in association with National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Jaipur, under Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.

During his presidential address, VN Krishnapillai, President of model Rubber Producer’s Society Kurumkanni, Kanjirappally for the last three decades, assured the participants that value addition in rubber, especially processing of latex, is a profitable enterprise.

“If more growers resort to market their products as latex, they could not justifiably demand any restriction on imports of solid forms of rubber,” he said.

The objective of the programme is to attract private entrepreneurship in sheet rubber processing for improving quality of sheet rubber. Owing to the labour shortage, a large number of growers are now shifting to the sale of latex rather than processing their produce into sheet rubber. Inconsistencies in the quality of rubber sheets are often reported owing to heterogeneous processing techniques adopted by growers.

Dr Ramesh Mittal, Director, National Institute of Agriculture Management (Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India), stressed on the need for entrepreneurship development in developing countries like India. We have been conducting sensitisation and training programmes for prospective entrepreneurs, he revealed.

M G Satheesh Chandran Nair (Deputy Director, Rubber Board, Kottayam), K K Mahadevan (Dy. Rubber Production Commissioner, Rubber Board Kanjirappally), Dr. Binoi K Kurian (Deputy Director, Market Promotion Division, Rubber Board) and S Mohanakumar (Market Research Officer, Rubber Board) also spoke at the event.
