Dynamic testing and simulation

The Global Center for Automotive Performance Simulation (GCAPS) is a world-class facility that provides revolutionary services for both vehicle and tyre, including testing, simulation, and modeling. GCAPS comprises the National tyre Research Center (NTRC), the Southern Virginia Vehicle Motion Labs (SoVa Motion), and the Virtual Design and Integration Laboratory (VDIL). Collectively, these initiatives provide the full range of services essential for creating a more dynamic product through both virtual and physical development.

GCAPS global customers include tyre OEM, Vehicle OEM, and Motorsport entities. These customers are located in most major countries within Europe, North America, and Asia.

GCAPS is affiliated with Virginia Tech and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. Located in the United States in the State of Virginia, travel and logistics are easy with access to major international airports.

The NTRC, which serves as the tyre characterization division of the GCAPS, has established itself as the premier location for passenger, light truck, motorcycle and motorsports tyre testing becoming the epicenter for tyre testing and tyre model data fidelity. The center specializes in testing designed to complement activities performed by global tyre and vehicle manufacturers. The NTRC uses transformational technology to extend tyre-testing capabilities up to 320 kph, providing dynamic response and braking/torque capabilities through the entyre speed range under both dry and wet surface conditions. The high-quality standards, innovative research, and unique equipment available at NTRC allow its staff to produce tyre data for both objective comparisons and for the creation of such tyre data used in Ftyre and MF-Swift models. The NTRC is also an approved lab by many vehicle OEMs for their tyre test protocols. The testing and modeling support conducted daily at NTRC has proven invaluable to many original equipment manufacturers and motorsports teams that routinely win accolades and are podium finishers.

VDIL serves as the modeling and simulation division of GCAPS and is comprised of a group of simulation engineers with a range of education backgrounds from aerospace to tyre mechanics, including multiple Ph.Ds. VDIL produces models and simulations used for vehicle dynamics, durability and ADAS evaluations. The group of simulation engineers are the most capable in transforming the high-fidelity data generated by the NTRC into tyre models that can be used for handling, ride, and load simulations. Available tyre models include MF-Tyre ™, MF-Swift™, PAC2002™ and Ftyre™. Through processes developed by both VDIL and NTRC, a high-quality tyre model is produced in just a short amount of time and minimal tyre quantities. VDIL is also capable of making full vehicle models used in ADAS technology and vehicle dynamics evaluations.

SoVa Motion serves as the vehicle characterization division of GCAPS. Since 2010, SoVa Motion has revolutionized vehicle testing for the automotive industry. SoVa Motion houses the Multi-post Vertical Dynamics Test Rig, an advanced machine that represents the next generation in dynamic suspension testing equipment that is used to improve the ride and handling dynamics of a vehicle for OEM or Motorsport entities. SoVa Motion provides the knowledge, experience, and capabilities necessary to obtain an ideal testing experience, from drive-file testing to hardware-in-the-loop vehicle simulation.
