Loose tyre crashes into car, man critically injured
An any-time nightmare on the road became a reality on Friday in New York when a loose tyre flew off a running car, jumped the median and crashed into another vehicle coming in the opposite direction, critically injuring one of its passengers. The weird accident happened on the Grand Central Parkway (Demo picture: courtesy i.ytimg.com).
According to a New York Post report quoting the police, the wheel came off the driver’s side of a Mazda travelling west near the Cross Island Parkway shortly before 2 p.m. It jumped the median and rolled into the opposite lanes and slammed into the passenger-side windshield of a Toyota RAV4.
A 63-year-old man suffered severe head trauma and a 62-year-old co-passenger had broken shoulder, according to police. The 27-year-old woman and a 15-month-old baby inside the Mazda SUV were taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Tyres come off the vehicle for many reasons, including improper maintenance, over-heating, faulty tyre pressure, faulty fixing etc. Also, roll-off tyres move even faster than the vehicle due to momentum, causing severe accidents that include fatality.
