More tyre choices for F1 season opener
The 2016 Formula 1 season starts this weekend in Australia and Pirelli has spread its tyre choices – three compounds to pick from, medium, soft and super soft. Till last season it was two. There will be 13 sets of dry weather tyres available over the race period.
Drivers can make different selections, even within teams. Mercedes has already done it – Lewis Hamilton picked one set of medium, six sets of soft and six super-soft, while Nico Rosberg went for two medium, five soft and six super soft. The other two teams where different sets were picked up by drivers are Sauber and Haas.
Williams, Red Bull, Renault, Toro Rosso, McLaren and Haas have gone with seven sets of the super-soft, while Mercedes and Ferrari have gone for six. Obviously, team strategies are going to be different this time.
According to a recent BBC Sport report, the F1 governing body had asked Pirelli to design faster tyres for the 2017 season following issues of quicker tyre degrading in the past season. The tyre supplier has adked for more testing during the 2016 season, which was approved by F1, the report said.
