Michelin wins safety award

Michelin has been named winner of the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award. It was announced at the inaugural Decade of Action for Road Safety Policy & Donor Forum in New York on May 2. Prince Michael of Kent, Royal Patron of the Commission for Global Road Safety, said that the global tyre major is “a leader in road safety innovation not only through its product development but also in the field of care for its own employees. But its wider corporate commitment to community safety and international programs is an outstanding example to all businesses.”

More for eco-tyres than eco-cars

About 61%of drivers would rather buy eco-friendly tires rather than eco cars, according to a survey conducted by Hankook Tire America Corp. About 68 percent of them cite better fuel economy and gas savings as their top reasons.

Cooper scores high

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company reported lesser sales but higher profit of $984 million, up by $82 million (9%), compared with the first quarter of 2011. Sales dipped lower than the prior year same quarter. Higher manufacturing costs, including $29 million related to the labour situation at the Company's manufacturing operations in Findlay, Ohio, decreased results by $31 million.
